Town of Pownal Transfer Station Guidelines

HOURS: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 8:00am to 4:00pm

The following are accepted at the Pownal Vermont Recycling Center:

Glass: Any food and beverage containers clear, green, brown.

Glass Preparation: Must be clean and dry. Remove caps & lids. No needles, china, or ceramics.

Tin Cans: Steel food and beverage cans, aerosol cans, cookie tins, steel screw caps and lids (will stick to magnet)

Tin Can Preparation: Must be clean and dry. Remove labels and expel all gas from aerosol cans. No aluminum cans, no partially filled cans, no propane cylinders, no scrap metal.

Plastic Containers: PET, HDPE Natural (uncolored), HDPE Colored (packing peanuts also accepted)

Plastic Preparation: Must be clean, dry and free of contamination. Remove caps, lids, and sprayers, rinse and drain detergent bottles, drain oil containers for 24 hours. No tied bundles, no plastic lids or caps, no plastic bags, no plastic film, no plastic tarps, no plastic toys, no plastic housewares, no flower pots, no gift wrap tape, no pyrex.

Deposit Containers: Glass, plastic, and aluminum

Deposit Preparation: Must be clean, dry and must have deposit label intact. Remove caps, place in designated container. No unopened containers, no partially filled containers.

Paper / Newspaper: Newspaper, newspaper inserts, magazines and mixed paper

Paper Preparation: Must be clean,dry, and loose. No tied bundles.

Corrugated boxes: Brown grocery bags, brown craft paper, cardboard

Corrugated Boxes Preparation: Must be clean, dry, and loose. Breakdown flat (open top and bottom), remove string from bags, remove plastic and wax paper liners from pet food bags, remove all contents. No waxed cardboard, no plastic coated cardboard, no tied bundles, no pizza boxes, no industrial cores, no boxboard.

Boxboard: Cereal, pasta, detergent, cake mix boxes, etc.

Boxboard Preparation: Must be clean, dry and loose. Remove all liner bags, remove any metal or plastic parts, remove any foil or plastic wrappings, breakdown flat (open top and bottom). No tied bundles, no plastic coated boxes, no wax coated boxes, no foil coated boxes, no milk cartons or egg cartons.

Metal and Appliances: No charge for: stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters. Remove garbage inside, no boxed or crated appliances, no firebrick in stoves or furnaces, no fuel in tanks.

Yard Waste and brush: free of charge for residents.

FREE DUMP DAY is now a day of your choice. Use it by June 30th. Valid Pownal Transfer Station Sticker required. You are allowed only two trips which must be done on the same day. ITEMS ALLOWED on FREE DUMP DAY: 4 car or light truck tires without rims, 1 refrigerant unit (freezer, refrigerator or air conditioner), household trash, stoves, washers, dryers, used motor oil (no brake fluid, solvents, water or antifreeze may be mixed with the waste oil) and batteries. ITEMS NOT ALLOWED on FREE DUMP DAY: propane tanks, tires with rims, and construction debris. No vehicles larger than 3/4 ton pickups are allowed.

No household hazardous waste in the garbage, no flammable liquids, no liquid paint or stain, no recyclables, no industrial waste, no infectious waste, no loose needles (see guidelines for proper disposal).

The Following Items WILL NOT Be Accepted: Industrial waste, medical waste, infectious waste, radioactive waste, automotive fluids (check with attendant for motor oil), or any other item regulated by federal, state or local authorities. Other Transfer Stations in the region will accept some or many of these items: Shaftsbury Transfer Station , Northshire Transfer Station , and Sunderland Transfer Station. If you are unable to find a place to legally dispose of these materials, contact Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.
